Welcome to the University of York Student Switch Off campaign

What is Student Switch Off?

Student Switch Off is a sustainability campaign running at the University of York which supports and encourages students to live sustainably, with a specific focus on saving energy and water, as well as recycling and reducing waste.

If you live in the college accommodation you are automatically taking part in the inter-college competition to save energy and recycle, but all students (no matter where they live) are encouraged to get involved and take action in their own homes! visit our get involved page to find out how you can take a more active role. For off-campus residents, we have lots of information about energy use in the home to help you save money on your bills and keep warm.

At the end of the year, the college that saves the most energy & recycles the best will win a cash prize for college activities!

Why does Student Switch Off exist?

Student Switch Off provides a platform for students to take personal action on the Climate Crisis.

  • Residence blocks are energy & water intensive buildings
  • Inefficient electricity, heat and water use all contribute to the Climate Crisis, with the majority of Europe’s energy coming from fossil fuels
  • When bills are included in rent, we may not be as enticed to save
  • Reducing energy & water waste is a great way to reduce negative environmental and social impact
  • Reducing waste and recycling where possible also saves energy, resources and cuts CO2 emissions
  • Whilst these actions aren’t going to solve the whole problem, it’s a great place for individuals to start as it’s simple and seemingly small actions really can add up

What impact does the campaign have?

The campaign runs in universities across Europe and in the past 12 years we have…

kept 20,000 tonnes of CO2 out the atmosphere, saved £2.5 million of electricity for the education sector, trained over 7,000 campaign ambassadors

Each and every small action contributes to our collective impact, so thanks for being part of Student Switch Off!
