What is Student Switch Off?

Student Switch Off is an energy, recycling and water saving campaign running at the University of Bath halls of residences

All the halls at Bath compete to be the most sustainable and at the end of the year the hall the best hall wins a prize (previous years have included an evening of food and drinks for the hall! If you live in halls you are automatically taking part in the competition but you have to pledge your support for the campaign to receive an invite for the end of year prize. You can pledge your support on our get involved page.

What should I do?

To help your hall win be sustainable over the year by following our energy saving, recycling and water saving advice. We also give away individual prizes over the year such as Ben & Jerry’s and TOTUM cards in our regular social media quizzes and competitions.

Why does Student Switch Off exist?

Student Switch Off provides a platform for students to take personal action on the Climate Crisis.

  • Halls of residence are energy & water intensive buildings
  • Inefficient electricity, heat and water use all contribute to the Climate Crisis, with the majority of Europe’s energy coming from fossil fuels
  • When bills are included in rent, we may not be as enticed to save
  • Reducing energy & water waste is a great way to reduce negative environmental and social impact
  • Whilst these actions aren’t going to solve the whole problem, it’s a great place for individuals to start as it’s simple and seemingly small actions really can add up

What impact does the campaign have?

The campaign runs in universities across Europe and in the past 12 years we have…

kept 20,000 tonnes of CO2 out the atmosphere, saved £2.5 million of electricity for the education sector, trained over 7,000 campaign ambassadors

Each and every small action contributes to our collective impact, so thanks for being part of Student Switch Off!
