What is Student Switch Off?

Student Switch Off is a sustainability campaign running at Imperial College London residences

Student Switch Off is a sustainability campaign and competition run in University residences. The campaign supports and encourages students living in residences to save energy and water, as well as reuse and recycle.

If your residence is participating, you are automatically taking part in the competition and you can pledge your support to be sustainable on our get involved page.

The residence with the highest student engagement throughout the year will win the overall prize – £250 for their hall student committee. View the latest leaderboard by visiting the page on the left-hand toolbar.

What should I do?

To help your hall win, ensure you are taking sustainable actions in residences over the year by following our energy saving, water saving and recycling advice. You can also get involved in our regular social media quizzes and competitions over the year where you can win individual prizes such as Ben & Jerry’s.

Why does Student Switch Off exist?

Student Switch Off provides a platform for students to take personal action on the Climate Crisis.

  • Halls of residence are energy & water intensive buildings
  • Inefficient electricity, heat and water use all contribute to the Climate Crisis, with the majority of Europe’s energy coming from fossil fuels
  • When bills are included in rent, we may not be as enticed to save
  • Reducing waste as well as recycling where possible also saves energy, resources and cuts CO2 emissions
  • Reducing energy & water waste is a great way to reduce negative environmental and social impact
  • Whilst these actions aren’t going to solve the whole problem, it’s a great place for individuals to start as it’s simple and seemingly small actions really can add up

What impact does the campaign have?

The campaign runs in universities across Europe and in the past 12 years we have…

kept 20,000 tonnes of CO2 out the atmosphere, saved £2.5 million of electricity for the education sector, trained over 7,000 campaign ambassadors

Each and every small action contributes to our collective impact, so thanks for being part of Student Switch Off!
