What is Student Switch Off?

Student Switch Off is a sustainability campaign running at the University of Exeter halls of residences

All the halls at Exeter compete to save energy, water and recycle well. At the end of the year the hall that has been the most sustainable gets a delivery of Ben & Jerry’s icecream for the hall! If you live in halls you are automatically taking part in the competition and you can pledge your support to be sustainable on our get involved page.

What should I do?

To help your hall win, ensure you are taking sustainable actions in residences over the year by following our energy saving, water saving and recycling advice. You can also get involved in our regular social media quizzes and competitions over the year where you can win individual prizes such as Ben & Jerry’s and TOTUM cards.

Why does Student Switch Off exist?

Student Switch Off provides a platform for students to take personal action on the Climate Crisis.

  • Halls of residence are energy & water intensive buildings
  • Inefficient electricity, heat and water use all contribute to the Climate Crisis, with the majority of Europe’s energy coming from fossil fuels
  • When bills are included in rent, we may not be as enticed to save
  • Reducing waste as well as recycling where possible also saves energy, resources and cuts CO2 emissions
  • Reducing energy & water waste is a great way to reduce negative environmental and social impact
  • Whilst these actions aren’t going to solve the whole problem, it’s a great place for individuals to start as it’s simple and seemingly small actions really can add up

What impact does the campaign have?

The campaign runs in universities across Europe and in the past 12 years we have…

kept 20,000 tonnes of CO2 out the atmosphere, saved £2.5 million of electricity for the education sector, trained over 7,000 campaign ambassadors

Each and every small action contributes to our collective impact, so thanks for being part of Student Switch Off!
