Welcome to the University of Cambridge Student Switch Off campaign.

What is Student Switch Off?

Student Switch Off (SSO) is a sustainability campaign and competition run in Cambridge colleges. The campaign supports and encourages students living in colleges to save energy and water, as well as reduce waste and recycle.

The college with the highest student engagement with the campaign throughout the year will win the SSO Trophy and £250 towards your end of year college event.

If your college is participating, you are automatically taking part in the competition but visit our get involved page to find out how you can personally do more, make your college more sustainable, and win individual prizes, such as Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

Participating colleges 2019-20: Churchill, Downing, Girton, Gonville & Caius, Lucy Cavendish, Pembroke, Peterhouse, Queens’

Why does Student Switch Off exist?

  • Reducing waste and recycling where possible also saves energy and cuts CO2 emissions
  • Whilst individual actions aren’t going to solve the whole problem, it’s a good place to start and seemingly small actions can add up
